In a display of community solidarity, the Nigerian Army’s 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support) and 14 Field Engineer Regiment spearheaded a large-scale sanitation exercise across Onitsha South Local Government Area on Wednesday.
Led by the Commander, Col. Adamu Muhammad, the operation targeted flood prevention and public health enhancement through intensive drainage unblocking and waste clearance in 11 neighborhoods of the bustling commercial hub.
The initiative, part of the Army’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) program, saw troops tackle neglected refuse dumps and clogged waterways in key areas, including Mbonu Ojike Street, Fegge, Nimo Street, Bishop Shanahan, and Sheba Street. Col. Muhammad underscored the dual focus on health and community rapport, stating, “This effort reflects our commitment to reciprocating the public’s support. A clean environment is vital for curbing disease and safeguarding families, especially as rains approach.”
Spanning flood-prone zones like Yahaya Street and Uzodimma Street, the exercise aimed to mitigate seasonal flooding risks while fostering trust between security forces and residents. “Military service extends beyond combat,” Col. Muhammad added. “By joining hands with civilians, we strengthen bonds crucial for collective progress.”
Local residents hailed the intervention, with trader Obiageli Nwankwo praising the troops’ dedication: “Seeing soldiers clear gutters surprised us all. This kindness rekindles our hope in partnership with the Army.” Community leaders echoed calls for sustained collaborations to address urban environmental challenges.
The cleanup reveals the Nigerian Army’s evolving role in grassroots development, aligning defense priorities with civic needs. As rains loom, the exercise not only shields Onitsha’s streets from floods but also deepens the bridge between military personnel and the communities they serve.
