Northern Governors Decry Killing of Kaduna Travelers in Plateau, Demand Swift Justice

The Journal Nigeria June 22, 2025

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has strongly condemned the killing of travellers from Kaduna State who were ambushed and murdered in Plateau State while on their way to a wedding.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on Sunday described the attack as “barbaric and cowardly,” urging for swift justice and restraint to prevent further violence.

The victims were reportedly intercepted and killed in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, a region recently plagued by communal unrest and violence.

In a statement issued by his Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Misilli, Governor Yahaya expressed profound grief over the tragic incident.
“I am deeply saddened by this horrific and inhumane attack,” Yahaya said. “Such mindless violence against innocent citizens is unacceptable and must be met with swift and decisive justice.”

He extended condolences to the government and people of Kaduna State, particularly the bereaved families, and prayed for the souls of the deceased.
Yahaya also praised Plateau State authorities and security operatives for their prompt response and the reported arrest of suspects linked to the killings.

“The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice without delay. This is not just about accountability—it’s about restoring faith in the rule of law and protecting the rights of every Nigerian,” he stated.

Amid rising tensions in the region, the NSGF Chairman appealed to residents of Plateau, Kaduna, and nearby communities to remain calm and law-abiding. He urged citizens to shun any form of reprisal.

“Let us not allow the actions of a few to divide our communities or ignite further violence,” Yahaya said. “I urge everyone to exercise restraint and patience as authorities work to ensure justice is served.”

He reiterated the Northern Governors’ collective resolve to strengthen security coordination, foster peaceful coexistence, and address the underlying causes of violence in the region.

“The safety and security of our people remain our top priority,” Yahaya added. “We will continue to work together as Northern Governors to strengthen community relations, improve intelligence sharing, and ensure such tragedies never happen again.”
