NYSC Withdraws Corps Members from Benue Community Following Herders’ Attack

The Journal Nigeria February 20, 2025

Mohamed Garba

In response to a recent violent attack by suspected herders in a Benue State community, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken decisive action by withdrawing all corps members stationed in the affected area. This move aims to ensure the safety and well-being of the young graduates serving in the region.

The attack, which occurred earlier this week, resulted in the tragic loss of lives and heightened tensions within the community. In light of these events, the NYSC, in collaboration with state authorities, deemed it necessary to relocate the corps members to more secure locations.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has consistently emphasized the importance of corps members’ safety. During the swearing-in ceremony of the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II orientation course, he assured the 2,200 deployed corps members of adequate security measures throughout their service year. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, acknowledged the security challenges in the state but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting all residents, including NYSC members.

This recent withdrawal is not an isolated incident. In December 2024, the NYSC withdrew corps members from Government Day Secondary School in Kulende, Ilorin, Kwara State, following an alleged assault on a female corps member by local teachers. Such actions underscore the NYSC’s dedication to the safety and welfare of its members, ensuring they serve in environments conducive to their well-being.

The NYSC’s proactive measures highlight the organization’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its members amidst Nigeria’s diverse security challenges.
