President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died at the age of 90.
In a condolence statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended heartfelt sympathies to the royal family, the government and people of Oyo State, and the entire Ibadanland over the loss of a revered traditional ruler, statesman, and custodian of Yoruba culture.
President Tinubu mourned the late monarch while also celebrating what he described as a “remarkable life of service” to the people, the state, and the nation at large. He hailed Oba Olakulehin as a man of peace and principle, whose leadership exemplified wisdom, humility, and dedication.
“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was not only a custodian of Ibadan’s rich history and culture but also a man of intellect and principle, whose contributions extended beyond the palace into education, governance, the military, and national development,” the President said.
Describing the late Olubadan as a former military officer and a public servant who carried himself with honour, Tinubu said the monarch’s life embodied the highest ideals of leadership and learning.
The President shared a personal reflection, revealing that he had recently received an invitation from the late monarch to attend his 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary celebrations. “Shockingly, his death came just days before the anniversary. He will be remembered for upholding the honour and prestige of his highly revered stool,” Tinubu added.
President Tinubu remembered Olubadan as a rare figure who served as a bridge between tradition and modernity, preserving cultural heritage while promoting education and civic responsibility. He said the late monarch’s wisdom and moral authority provided a stabilising force in Ibadanland and across the broader Yoruba nation.
He further commended Oba Olakulehin’s ability to unite people across generations and backgrounds, stating that his reign will be remembered for dignity, humility, and service to humanity.
The President prayed for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and urged the people of Ibadan to take solace in the enduring values and legacy Oba Olakulehin left behind.
