A major step toward realigning Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections is unfolding today as prominent opposition leaders are gathering at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, for the official unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a unifying political platform.
Leading the pack of political heavyweights present are former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai. Also in attendance are former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye.
Significantly, two newly appointed interim national officers of the ADC — David Mark, former Senate President, and Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun State Governor — are also at the high-level gathering, signaling a serious intent to reshape the country’s opposition strategy.
The event marks a major milestone in ongoing consultations among Nigeria’s key opposition figures to forge a common front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election cycle.
Sources close to the coalition reveal that discussions are centered around harmonizing political structures, policy visions, and grassroots mobilization to ensure the success of a unified opposition under the ADC banner.
More details are expected to emerge from the unveiling as party leaders outline their roadmap and present a vision for what could be Nigeria’s most ambitious opposition merger since the formation of the APC in 2013.
Recall that the the formal unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the central coalition platform for Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections has earlier in the day suffered a dramatic setback, after the management of Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments, Asokoro, abruptly cancelled a fully paid reservation for the event venue.
The coalition has attributed the sudden cancellation to the handiwork of the ruling All Progressives Congress which it described as jittery.
