Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, conducted an on the spot assessment of the ongoing upgrade work at Alau Dam, addressing rising fears among Maiduguri residents following recent heavy rainfall and the potential threat of flooding. During the inspection, the governor sought to allay anxieties, stating there was “no cause for alarm” as proactive measures had been taken to mitigate flood risks.
Governor Zulum acknowledged the widespread panic among residents but assured them that his administration was closely monitoring the situation. “New drainage channels have been constructed, and water levels in the dam have already receded by about four inches in recent days,”he explained, emphasizing that the water volume would continue to decrease as the channels facilitate proper flow.
The governor, however, issued a stern warning to residents against illegal construction on waterways, stressing that such actions exacerbate flooding and endanger communities. He urged compliance with urban planning regulations to prevent future disasters.

In a significant acknowledgment, Governor Zulum praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N80 billion in funding for the Alau Dam upgrade project, describing it as a critical intervention that will enhance water management and flood control in the region.

The inspection comes as part of the state government’s efforts to ensure infrastructure resilience and safeguard residents from seasonal flooding, with further updates expected as the project progresses.
