Police Arrest Government Official, Two Monarchs Over Ebonyi Attack

In a major security crackdown, the Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a government official, two traditional rulers, and other individuals over a deadly attack in the state. The incident, which left four residents dead—three of them reportedly beheaded—has drawn widespread concern.

The attack stemmed from a long-standing land dispute between the people of Okporojor in Oso Edda community, Edda LGA, and their neighbors from Amasiri in Afikpo LGA. Tensions escalated on January 29, when suspected armed individuals attacked Okporojor village, destroying homes and property while claiming lives.

Speaking on the arrests, Ebonyi Police Command’s spokesman, Superintendent Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that the coordinator of Amasiri, traditional rulers Onyaidam Bassey and Godfrey Oko-Obia, along with other suspects, are in police custody. “Investigations are ongoing, and the command will not relent until everyone involved is brought to justice,” Ukandu said. He added that the operation was conducted jointly by the Nigerian Police, Army, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The state government has also acted swiftly. Governor Francis Nwifuru dissolved the political and traditional leadership of the Amasiri clan in Afikpo LGA during a visit to Okporojor village. Residents have welcomed the intervention, calling for justice and the immediate apprehension of all perpetrators.

The Ebonyi attack underscores the economic and social impact of unresolved land disputes in the region. Analysts warn that recurring violence disrupts community stability, local investment, and economic growth, highlighting the urgent need for effective conflict resolution.
