The Borno State Police Command successfully recovered and defused a dangerous unexploded Improvised Explosive Device (IED) discovered in a farmland located in Dikwa Local Government Area, preventing what could have been a catastrophic incident.

The explosive was detected by a vigilant farmer, Babagana Kachalla, who immediately reported the suspicious object to security authorities. The Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, mobilized the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Base 13 unit from Maiduguri to the scene.

Upon arrival, the bomb disposal team secured the area following standard EOD-Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) safety protocols. Preliminary examination revealed the device to be a Cluster Bomb Unit (CBU) measuring approximately 2.2 meters in length and 30 centimeters in width, partially buried in the farmland.

The highly trained operatives conducted a controlled detonation on site to neutralize the threat before carefully extracting and dismantling the device’s components. The operation was executed without any casualties or collateral damage.

In the aftermath, police personnel conducted Explosive Ordnance Risk Awareness (EORA) training for local residents, educating them on how to identify and safely report suspicious objects to prevent future risks.

The Borno State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual items or suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.

This incident underscores the lingering threat of unexploded ordnance in conflict affected regions of Northeast Nigeria, highlighting the critical role of community alertness and rapid security response in mitigating potential tragedies.
