Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, after officials announced that the country’s First Gentleman died while receiving medical treatment in Zanzibar.
The announcement was made on Monday, September 7, 2026, by Tanzania’s Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Ameir died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar while undergoing treatment for a heart condition. Funeral arrangements were said to be underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
Beyond his role as the spouse of Tanzania’s president, Ameir held a unique place in the country’s political history. When Samia Suluhu Hassan became president in March 2021, he became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman a position created by circumstance after the country’s first woman president assumed office.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan largely maintained a low public profile despite his wife’s rise to the highest political office in Tanzania.
Before becoming First Gentleman, he was known primarily as an agricultural academic and professional whose career was separate from the political path of his wife. Unlike many presidential spouses who take active public roles, Ameir rarely appeared at official events and generally stayed away from political attention.
His public significance came largely from his historic position after President Samia’s elevation to the presidency.

Following news of Ameir’s death, regional leaders expressed condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.
Kenyan President William Ruto was among those who conveyed sympathy, describing Ameir’s death as a loss for President Samia, her family and Tanzania.
The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also issued a statement expressing condolences to President Samia, her family and Tanzanians. The statement described the loss as a difficult moment and offered support to the bereaved family.
The position held by Ameir was unusual within Tanzania’s political tradition.
Before Samia became president, the spouse of a Tanzanian president was traditionally the First Lady because previous presidents were men. Her rise to office changed that arrangement, making Ameir the first man to occupy the corresponding role.
However, the role of First Gentleman remained largely ceremonial, and Ameir did not become involved in government decision-making or political administration.
His public identity remained linked mainly to his support as the spouse of Tanzania’s head of state and to the historical nature of his position.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan continues to lead Tanzania after becoming the country’s first female president in 2021.
Her presidency has attracted regional and international attention because of Tanzania’s political transition, economic agenda and diplomatic role in East Africa.
The death of Ameir represents a personal loss for the president and her family, while also marking the end of a distinctive chapter in Tanzania’s presidential history.
