Nigeria’s Super Falcons showed composure and determination under pressure as they secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Botswana to book their place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In a match that tested their patience and resilience, the nine-time African champions remained focused until the dying moments, when substitute striker Chinwendu Ihezuo stepped up once again with a clutch goal in the 88th minute. Ihezuo, who plays club football in Mexico, has now scored twice as a substitute, cementing her reputation as a reliable game-changer for the national team.
The Falcons dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the encounter, but were repeatedly denied by Botswana’s impressive defensive organisation and inspired goalkeeping. Despite the frustration of missed opportunities, the team never lost belief.
Coach Justin Madugu’s side now sits comfortably at the top of Group B with six points from two matches. Their opening 3–0 win over Tunisia and tonight’s victory reflect the team’s steady progress as they continue their quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Algeria is second in the group with four points after playing out a goalless draw with Tunisia earlier in the day. Tunisia holds third place with a point, while Botswana trails at the bottom.
The Super Falcons will now turn their focus to their final group game against Algeria on Sunday, aiming to maintain their perfect record and fine-tune their form ahead of the knockout rounds. With their experience, depth, and growing confidence, Nigeria remain a strong favourite in the tournament.
