The Nigerian Senate on Thursday passed a vote of confidence in its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, amidst recent sexual harassment allegations leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.
The resolution came during a plenary session where Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) introduced the motion, emphasizing that the allegations should be addressed through appropriate legal channels. He referenced Senate Rule 40, which precludes the chamber from deliberating on matters currently before the judiciary.
Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West) seconded the motion, reinforcing the sentiment that the Senate should not be sidetracked by unproven claims. When put to a vote, the motion received overwhelming support from the senators present.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had recently accused Senator Akpabio of sexual harassment and reported the incident, along with her suspension from the Senate, to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Her suspension has sparked debates, with some observers suggesting potential political motivations behind the action.
The Senate’s vote underscores its commitment to due process and the rule of law, urging the public not to let these allegations distract from the legislative body’s responsibilities. The chamber emphasized that such matters are best resolved within the judicial system, ensuring that all parties receive a fair hearing.
