Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Sunday departed Abuja for New York to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level general debate and participate in several side events.
The statement read in part:
“Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja, Nigeria, to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, holding in New York, United States of America, from Monday, September 22 to Sunday, September 28, 2025. Senator Shettima, who is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the global event, will deliver Nigeria’s national statement and join other dignitaries at the UN high-level general debates, among other side events.”
Nkwocha further disclosed that the Vice-President is expected to announce Nigeria’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement at a special UN climate event.
This year’s General Assembly, which formally opened on September 9, will feature several key events, including the SDG Moment on September 22 to highlight global progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. The high-level general debate will run from September 23 to 27 and conclude on September 29.
While in New York, Shettima’s programme will include bilateral and multilateral engagements on issues of national and international importance.
