Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has accused security operatives of launching an unprovoked attack on peaceful protesters during Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu rally in Abuja.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Sowore alleged that security forces opened fire shortly after the protest began in front of the Transcorp Hilton Abuja. He also confirmed that several individuals, including Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother and his lawyer, Barr. Aloy Ejimakor, were arrested and reportedly beaten before being taken to the FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force.
“There were about 10 trucks that arrived as soon as we started the protest. There was no provocation on our part; it was an orderly and peaceful protest. Suddenly, they started shooting at us, deployed tear gas, and fired live bullets. Luckily, I don’t think anyone was hit, but bullets were being fired all around us,” Sowore said.
The incident underscores growing tensions surrounding the #FreeNnamdiKanu campaign and has raised concerns over the use of excessive force against protesters in the federal capital. Further details regarding the arrests and the condition of those detained are yet to be confirmed by authorities.
