The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, describing him as a remarkable monarch whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.

In a condolence message released on Monday and signed by the Secretary to the Sultanate Council, Alhaji Sai’idu Maccido, the Sultan said the late Oba’s death had created a significant void in the country’s traditional leadership.

“The departure of this exceptional ruler creates a profound loss that will resonate throughout the nation. He was a visionary leader, both in his wisdom and deeds,” the Sultan stated.

Although Oba Olakulehin’s reign lasted just twelve months, the Sultan commended his dedication to the welfare of his people and the progress of Ibadan. He described the late monarch’s brief tenure as one marked by exemplary leadership and commitment to communal advancement.

“As short as his reign was, his impact was undeniable. He served with distinction and remained steadfast in his pursuit of development and peace,” the statement read.

In his capacity as Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, the Sultan also acknowledged Oba Olakulehin’s efforts in promoting national unity and fostering inter-ethnic harmony. He praised the late monarch as a selfless leader who prioritized collective interest over personal gain.

The Sultan concluded his message with heartfelt prayers for the bereaved royal family, the Olubadan-in-Council, and the people of Oyo State.

“May the Almighty grant the family and citizens of Ibadan the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss. Amen,” he prayed.

Oba Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, passed away recently at the age of 90. Plans for his final rites are underway.
