Nigeria’s Super Eagles are back in the spotlight as they take on Lesotho today at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, in a crucial match for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes.
The Eagles seemed on the brink after a 1-1 draw with South Africa on September 1, but a recent ruling—docking South Africa points for fielding an ineligible player—has revitalized Nigeria’s chances, leaving them three points behind group leaders Benin and South Africa.
With just two matches remaining, Nigeria must win both games and hope for favorable results elsewhere. South Africa will face Zimbabwe and Rwanda in their final fixtures, while Benin will look to maintain their lead. Every point will count as multiple teams remain mathematically in contention for the top spot in Group C.
Nigeria’s head-to-head record against Lesotho is encouraging: since 2019, the Eagles have beaten Lesotho twice and drawn once. However, Lesotho held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Uyo in November 2023, showing they are capable of causing an upset.
Coach Éric Chelle has urged focus and intensity, warning that football is unpredictable and that outcomes can be influenced by factors like weather, refereeing, and small errors. “Our eyes must be on the three points,” Chelle said during Thursday’s press conference in Polokwane.
Group C standings ahead of Matchday 9:
Benin: 14 points (+4 GD)
South Africa: 14 points (+2 GD)
Nigeria: 11 points (+2 GD)
Rwanda: 11 points (0 GD)
Today’s fixture kicks off at 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Nigeria time) and will be broadcast on DStv SuperSport, SportyBet TV, and AfroSport. Nigeria’s fate now depends on a win against Lesotho and hopes that results elsewhere fall in their favor.
