Super Eagles Pocket N3.56bn After AFCON Bronze Finish In Casablanca
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have earned a massive ₦3.56 billion in prize money after finishing third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following a dramatic 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt in the bronze medal playoff in Casablanca.
The encounter ended goalless after regulation time, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerging as Nigeria’s hero. The shot-stopper saved two penalties to secure the Super Eagles’ ninth third-place finish in AFCON history.
Nigeria’s podium finish came amid a record-breaking prize pool announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), reflecting a major financial boost for teams at Africa’s flagship football tournament.
Senegal were crowned champions for the second time in their history after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in extra time in a tense final in Rabat. Pape Gueye struck the decisive goal just three minutes into extra time, silencing the packed stadium.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe had earlier confirmed that prize money for the 2025 tournament had been significantly increased, with the champions receiving a record $10 million (₦14.23bn) — up from $7 million in the previous edition.
Under the new prize structure, runners-up Morocco earned $4 million (₦5.69bn), Nigeria received $2.5 million (₦3.56bn) for third place, while Egypt collected $1.3 million (₦1.85bn) for finishing fourth.

Quarter-finalists were awarded $800,000 (₦1.14bn), third-placed teams in the group stage earned $700,000 (₦996m), while teams finishing bottom of their groups received $500,000 (₦711m).
Speaking ahead of the tournament in Rabat, Motsepe stressed CAF’s commitment to growing African football through improved financial incentives.
“It was less than $5 million before 2023, and we increased it to $7 million. Now, if you win, you get $10 million — and we will continue to raise the prize money for Africa’s most important competition,” he said.

Nigeria’s bronze medal triumph was sealed from the spot, with Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman all converting their penalties, while Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush missed their efforts.
The result not only reinforced Nigeria’s strong AFCON pedigree but also highlighted the growing financial rewards tied to success on the continental stage.
