The Super Falcons of Nigeria have sealed their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after battling to a 1–1 draw against the Benin Republic on Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta.
The result saw Nigeria progress 3–1 on aggregate, having triumphed 2–0 in the first leg in Lomé last week. The qualification further cements the Falcons’ dominance on the continent as they chase a record-extending 11th African title.
Head coach Justine Madugu made only one change to his starting lineup, recalling Asisat Oshoala to replace Chiwendu Ihezuo in attack. The decision immediately paid off as Nigeria took early control of the match, dictating the tempo and pinning the visitors deep in their half.
The breakthrough came in the 12th minute when defender Ashleigh Plumptre rose highest to meet Esther Okoronkwo’s well-delivered corner, powering home a superb header that sent the home fans into celebration.
Despite creating further chances through Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, the Falcons failed to add to their tally before halftime.
Benin, showing greater determination after the restart, capitalised on a rare defensive lapse to grab an equaliser in the 61st minute through Yasminath Djibril, momentarily silencing the home crowd.
The Nigerians, however, maintained composure and managed the game effectively to secure the aggregate victory that books their ticket to Morocco, hosts of the WAFCON 2026 finals scheduled for March 17 to April 3, 2026.
Speaking after the match, Coach Madugu praised his players for their discipline and focus:
“It was a tough tie, but the girls showed character and maturity. We’re happy to qualify and will begin preparations for Morocco immediately.”
With the qualification, Nigeria joins the list of African heavyweights heading to the tournament, where the team will aim to reaffirm its continental supremacy and secure another pathway toward the global stage.
