An overnight collision involving a tanker and a heavy-duty truck on the Third Mainland Bridge caused severe traffic disruptions during Monday’s morning rush hour.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement and video released early on Monday, saying the crash occurred near the University of Lagos waterfront, on the lane heading towards Lagos Island.
LASTMA reported that the accident was recorded at about 6:58 a.m., although the collision itself happened overnight. The impact of the crash, however, persisted into the early hours, leading to gridlock as motorists exited the Tollgate towards Iyana-Oworo.
According to the agency, traffic congestion spilled into surrounding routes as drivers sought alternative roads. Areas affected included Alapere inward Lagos Island, Oshodi–Apapa Expressway inward Lagos Island, and parts of Ikorodu Road.
In a statement, LASTMA said:
“Traffic is moving slowly exiting the Tollgate towards Iyana-Oworo due to an accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, near the UNILAG waterfront, heading towards the Island. A tanker and a truck collided overnight, causing significant disruptions. Our personnel and the Nigerian Police Force are on the scene actively monitoring traffic and ensuring safety. Cones have been placed behind the vehicles to prevent further accidents.”
The agency added that efforts were ongoing to evacuate the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow.
LASTMA urged motorists to exercise caution, remain patient, and plan their journeys accordingly, assuring the public that further updates would be provided as the situation develops.
