President Bola Tinubu convened a crucial meeting today with Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (Retd), the newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers State, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This development follows the president’s declaration of a state of emergency in the oil-rich state, citing prolonged political instability and security concerns.
Vice Admiral Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, arrived at the State House at approximately 12:50 pm. His appointment comes on the heels of President Tinubu’s suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. The president emphasized that this decisive action aims to restore order and ensure the effective governance of the state.
In his address announcing the state of emergency, President Tinubu highlighted the urgency of addressing the crises that have disrupted governance and threatened national stability. He emphasized the federal government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and well-being of Rivers State residents.
The newly appointed sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibas, has been entrusted with overseeing the state’s governance during this interim period. While he possesses the authority to manage state affairs, he is restricted from enacting new laws. Any regulations issued under his administration are subject to approval by the Federal Executive Council and presidential promulgation.
The president assured that the state’s judiciary would continue to function independently, maintaining the checks and balances essential to democratic governance. This measure aims to stabilize Rivers State and pave the way for a return to normalcy and democratic processes.
As the situation unfolds, the federal government calls on all stakeholders and residents of Rivers State to cooperate with the interim administration to ensure peace, security, and the swift resolution of the ongoing crises.
