President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the leadership crisis of the Lagos State House of Assembly, overruling the recommendations of the Akande-led mediation panel and backing Mudashiru Obasa to remain as Speaker.
The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed from his position by a majority of the lawmakers, citing allegations of financial misappropriation and misconduct. He was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, as the new Speaker.
In response to the ensuing turmoil, President Tinubu appointed a mediation panel led by former governors Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba to resolve the impasse. The panel recommended that both Obasa and Meranda step down to allow for a new leadership to emerge from the Lagos West Senatorial District.
However, in a surprising move, President Tinubu has decided to overrule the panel’s recommendation, expressing full support for Obasa’s reinstatement as Speaker. This decision underscores Tinubu’s significant influence in Lagos politics and his commitment to maintaining stability within the state’s legislative arm.
Following the President’s directive, Mojisola Meranda officially resigned from her position on March 3, 2025, after a 49-day tenure, paving the way for Obasa’s return. In her resignation speech, Meranda stated that her decision was made in the interest of democracy and to prevent further crises within the Assembly.
Obasa’s reinstatement has been met with mixed reactions. While some lawmakers and party members view it as a necessary step to restore order, others express concerns about the implications for internal democracy within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
As the Lagos State House of Assembly resumes its legislative duties under Obasa’s leadership, all eyes are on the Assembly to see how it navigates the challenges ahead and works towards the development of the state.
