Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, have arrested two herders for allegedly trespassing on community farmlands and destroying crops in Makurdi, Benue State, according to a statement signed on Tuesday by the operation’s spokesperson.
The incident occurred on November 20, 2025, when troops deployed at Zongo Akiki intercepted the suspects after they allegedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents.
In the statement, the spokesperson for the operation, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, said the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to protect farmers and guarantee food security during the peak harvest period.
“In a sustained effort to protect farmers and guarantee food security during the peak of the harvest season, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke arrested two herders who were found trespassing and destroying crops on a community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State,” Zubairu said.
He explained that the vigilant troops intercepted the suspects after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands, damaging crops. He added that the swift intervention prevented further destruction and a possible confrontation between the herders and the affected farmers.
“The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action,” he said.
The Force Commander, Maj.-Gen. Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands when disputes arise.
He warned that violence and reprisals only heighten tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence, while also cautioning herders to be law-abiding and desist from criminal behaviour that threatens peace and order.
Gara reaffirmed the commitment of Operation Whirl Stroke to protecting farmlands and ensuring a secure environment for legitimate economic activities.
