Trump Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Iran Over Hormuz Blockade
United States President Donald Trump has threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s energy infrastructure unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened within 48 hours. The ultimatum, posted to Truth Social on Saturday, expires at 23:44 GMT on Monday. Trump warned that the US would target Iranian power plants, “starting with the biggest one first,” if the world’s most vital oil chokepoint remains closed. This escalation follows three weeks of conflict that have seen global energy markets buckle under the weight of an effective Iranian blockade.
The threat comes as Tehran launched its most devastating missile strike on Israel to date. Over 100 people were reportedly killed as Iranian missiles bypassed Israeli air defences, striking residential areas in Arad and Dimona. In Arad alone, first responders treated 84 injuries, while a direct hit on a building in Dimona left a 10-year-old boy in critical condition. Dimona is home to Israel’s highly sensitive nuclear facility, making the strike a significant breach of red lines.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate “on all fronts” following what he described as a “very difficult evening.” Hours after the strikes, the Israeli military launched a fresh wave of aerial bombardments targeting Tehran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the attack on Dimona was a direct response to an earlier Israeli strike on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility. The tit-for-tat strikes on nuclear-linked sites have prompted Rafael Grossi, head of the UN nuclear watchdog, to plead for urgent military restraint.
Iran has further antagonised Western powers by barring “hostile” tankers from the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s petroleum passes daily. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that restrictions only apply to nations involved in attacks against Iran. Tehran is also reportedly considering shifting all trade within the waterway to the Chinese Yuan to bypass the US dollar. In response to Trump’s ultimatum, the Iranian army threatened to target American and allied energy and desalination plants across the Middle East.
The humanitarian toll of the latest missile barrage is the highest since the war began in June 2025. In southern Israel, emergency workers are still combing through the rubble of flattened facades and deep craters. Beyond the borders of Israel and Iran, the IRGC claimed to have targeted military sites in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The conflict is no longer a localized skirmish; it is a regional conflagration that threatens the global economy.
Thousands of US Marines are currently heading to the Middle East to reinforce existing positions. Trump’s rhetoric marks a sharp pivot from just 24 hours ago, when he suggested he was looking to “wind down” military operations. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz appears to have forced his hand. With the 48-hour clock ticking, the prospect of a direct, full-scale war between the United States and Iran has never been more immediate.
