The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy in Nigeria through support for electoral reforms, good governance, peace, and stability.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, gave the assurance during a meeting with the Chairman of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, on Thursday.

A statement signed by Makut Simon Macham, Special Adviser on Media to Senator Lalong, said discussions focused on ongoing efforts to amend the Electoral Act in order to strengthen the credibility of future elections.
Senator Lalong, who represents Plateau South, assured the envoy that the National Assembly is engaging stakeholders to fast-track reforms that will improve Nigeria’s electoral process. He noted that the committee was nearing the conclusion of its review process.

While commending the UK’s role in engaging critical stakeholders, Lalong said: “We are committed to working with development partners like the UK to ensure electoral laws reflect international best practices.”
On his part, Montgomery reiterated Britain’s partnership with Nigeria in advancing democratic values. “The UK remains committed to supporting reforms that will deepen democracy, promote peace, and ensure good governance in Nigeria,” he said.
The meeting is part of ongoing consultations between Nigeria’s legislature and international partners to ensure that upcoming elections are more transparent, inclusive, and credible.
