UNIABUJA Students Win N5.4m Research Grants Awarded to Six Undergraduates

In a boost to undergraduate research, the University of Abuja’s Centre for Undergraduate Research (CUR) has awarded six students research grants totaling N5.450 million, the largest amount ever awarded in the institution’s history.

The grants were presented to the winners by Vice Chancellor Prof. Aisha Maikudi during the 6th Undergraduate Research Day, held under the theme “Promoting National Development Through Research.” Maikudi emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering a culture of curiosity, creativity, and innovation, aligning research outcomes with solutions to societal challenges.

The six winning students, from various departments, presented research proposals that showcased their innovative ideas and solutions to real-world problems. Their research topics ranged from bioactive compounds and waste management to antimicrobial properties and energy consumption modeling.

The winners are: Ngutswen Aondonenge Emmanuel (Biological Science) – Bioactive Compounds from K. pinnata and J. tanjorensis, Isa Iqraam Ozavize (Veterinary Medicine) – Assessment of Biosafety and Waste Management Practices in Abattoirs, Madaki Enyojo Nathan (Microbiology) – Application of Vermitechnology in Solid Waste Management, Egbeji Paul Owam (Medical Laboratory Science) – Evaluating Phytochemicals and Antidiabetic Properties of Curry Leaves, Okolie Juliet Ukamaka (Economics) – Using AI and ML to Model Energy Consumption in University Hostels, Ezeadua Valentine Chinonso (Medical Laboratory Science) – Phytochemical and Antimicrobial Properties of Calopogonium Mucunoides.

The Centre for Undergraduate Research (CUR) has announced that it is already accepting applications for the next round of research grants, with a revised criterion emphasizing alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
