Warwick Davis is set to reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter television series, the network has confirmed.
The Bafta-winning actor previously portrayed the beloved Charms master in all eight Harry Potter films, based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling novels. He becomes the first actor from the original movie franchise to return for the new adaptation.
Davis also played the goblin Griphook on screen, but the role will now be taken over in the series by actor Leigh Gill, best known for his performance in Joker and its upcoming sequel Joker: Folie à Deux.
The announcement was made during the annual “Back to Hogwarts” celebrations on 1 September, when fans mark the day Hogwarts students return for a new school year. Several additional casting updates were also revealed.
Elijah Oshin will take on the role of Gryffindor student Dean Thomas, while Finn Stephens and William Nash will play Draco Malfoy’s sidekicks, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle.
The series, billed as a decade-long project, will span ten years in total, with the first instalment expected to debut in 2027. Filming began earlier this summer, with the release of the first image of 11-year-old Dominic McLaughlin in costume as Harry Potter. Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton will appear as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger respectively.
The supporting cast includes Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden as ghostly historian Professor Cuthbert Binns, and Brid Brennan as Hogwarts matron Madam Poppy Pomfrey.
They join an ensemble of established names already announced: John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost will take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer will appear as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape.
Production is taking place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire — the same location used for the original films. HBO has described the project as “a faithful adaptation of the iconic books,” with the longer format giving the storylines “room to breathe” in ways the films could not.
Fans now await the return of the wizarding world to screens, with Davis once again at the heart of Hogwarts life.
