WHO Launches Initiative to Provide Free Cancer Medications for Children in Low-Income Nations

The Journal Nigeria February 11, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

Geneva, Switzerland – In a monumental move to combat pediatric cancer disparities, the World Health Organization (WHO) has unveiled a pioneering platform aimed at supplying free cancer medications to children in low-income countries. This initiative seeks to bridge the treatment gap and improve survival rates among young patients in underserved regions.

Cancer remains a leading cause of death among children worldwide, with a significant disparity in survival rates between high-income and low-income countries. In affluent nations, over 80% of children with cancer survive, while in poorer regions, the survival rate can be as low as 20%. A major contributing factor to this disparity is the lack of access to essential cancer medications.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, emphasized the urgency of the initiative: “Every child, regardless of where they live, deserves access to effective cancer treatment. This platform is a significant step towards equity in healthcare and will save countless young lives.”

How the Platform Works

The newly established platform will collaborate with pharmaceutical companies, non-governmental organizations, and international partners to procure and distribute essential cancer medications. By leveraging collective purchasing power and fostering partnerships, the platform aims to: Ensure a consistent supply of high-quality cancer drugs. Negotiate reduced prices with manufacturers. Provide training and support to healthcare providers in administering treatments.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, WHO’s Chief Scientist, highlighted the collaborative nature of the platform: “By bringing together stakeholders from various sectors, we can create a sustainable model that ensures life-saving medications reach the children who need them most.”

The initiative has garnered support from numerous international organizations and governments. UNICEF has pledged logistical assistance in distributing medications, while the World Bank is exploring funding opportunities to support the platform’s operations.

Implementation will begin in select pilot countries, with plans to expand to additional nations over the next five years. The focus will be on building local healthcare capacity, ensuring that medical professionals are equipped to deliver effective cancer treatments.

While the platform represents a significant advancement, WHO acknowledges that addressing pediatric cancer in low-income countries requires a multifaceted approach. Efforts will continue to improve early diagnosis, enhance healthcare infrastructure, and raise awareness about childhood cancers.

Dr. Tedros concluded, “This is a landmark moment in our fight against childhood cancer. Together, we can turn the tide and give every child the chance to live a healthy, fulfilling life.”
