World Health Organization Pleads with US to Reconsider Withdrawal Amid Global Health Concerns

The Journal Nigeria January 21, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep regret over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the global health body, urging the US to reconsider its move.

This development comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the US to withdraw from WHO, citing unfair treatment and excessive financial burden.

WHO emphasized its crucial role in protecting global health, including that of Americans, highlighting its efforts in addressing disease root causes, strengthening health systems, and responding to emergencies. The organization also noted its significant reforms over the past seven years to enhance accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact.

The US has been a founding member of WHO since 1948 and has played a vital role in shaping global health policies and initiatives. Joint achievements include eradicating smallpox and nearly eradicating polio. WHO hopes to engage in constructive dialogue with the US to maintain their partnership, which benefits millions worldwide.

This marks the second attempt by the US to exit WHO, with the first attempt being reversed by former President Joe Biden’s administration. Germany has also urged President Trump to reconsider the withdrawal, with plans to engage in diplomatic discussions.
