Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has debunked viral claims suggesting he is plotting to defect to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside five other governors, describing the rumours as baseless and politically motivated.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, on Sunday, the governor reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that his focus remains firmly on the development and stability of Borno State.
“These claims are completely false and have no basis in reality. They are the handiwork of political detractors who have not contributed anything meaningful to Borno or Nigeria,” Iliya stated.
Governor Zulum, widely regarded for his proactive leadership in post-insurgency recovery efforts in Borno, said he remains too engaged with the rebuilding of Borno State to entertain political distractions.
“I am too focused on the enormous task of rebuilding Borno and delivering dividends of democracy to our people to be distracted by petty politics,” the governor was quoted as saying.
He characterized the defection rumour as a “cheap tactic” by opportunists attempting to gain political relevance through misinformation, urging the public to be wary of such falsehoods.
The governor also advised the media and the general public to verify information through official government channels and to refrain from amplifying unverified rumours.
“Our people deserve facts, not fabricated stories. We will not be distracted from our mandate of peace, development, and good governance,” the statement added.
Governor Zulum, a key figure in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and a vocal advocate for good governance, reiterated his loyalty to the APC, which he said has supported Borno’s recovery and security initiatives.
“Governor Zulum is, and remains, a committed member of the APC. His loyalty is unshaken, and his priority is the well-being of the people of Borno State,” Iliya concluded.
The governor’s statement comes amid heightened political speculation ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, his firm dismissal of the rumour is expected to douse tension and refocus attention on governance and security in the region.
