FG Shuts Plateau Mining Site After Suspected Toxic Gas Deaths

The Federal Government has ordered the closure of Mining Licence 11810 in Plateau State. Authorities acted after suspected toxic gas exposure reportedly killed several miners. The affected site lies within Wase Local Government Area. Officials identified the operator as Solid Unit Nigeria Limited.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake directed an immediate investigation into the incident. He dispatched a high-level team led by the ministry’s permanent secretary. The team includes experts in environmental compliance and mining regulation. Preliminary findings described the location as an abandoned lead pit.
Reports suggested stored minerals emitted hazardous sulphuric oxide gas. Unaware of the danger, local miners reportedly entered the excavation zone.

Community sources alleged that dozens died instantly from inhalation exposure. Several others reportedly sustained injuries and received emergency treatment.
However, authorities have yet to confirm the exact casualty figures. Notably, early reports indicated the company had ceded the pit to villagers. The arrangement allegedly followed community agitation for mining participation. That disclosure raises urgent questions about regulatory supervision and safety enforcement. Therefore, the tragedy sharpens national debate over artisanal mining governance. It underscores the fragile balance between economic desperation and industrial safety standards. Above all, it demands stronger oversight to prevent avoidable loss of life.
