Ondo Monarch Abducted, Found Dead in Community
Ondo State faces renewed shock as gunmen abduct and kill a traditional ruler. Oba Kehinde Jacob Falodun, the Alagamo of Agamo community in Akure North Local Government Area, was forcibly taken from his home on Wednesday evening. Authorities confirmed the monarch was discovered dead with multiple gunshot wounds shortly after the abduction.
According to the Ondo State Police Command, six armed men stormed the ruler’s residence at around 7:50 p.m., overpowering security and taking him away. Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, stated that community leaders promptly reported the attack, triggering a coordinated police response.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer, together with tactical teams, mobilized officers in collaboration with Atuluse Security, local hunters, and Amotekun operatives to comb adjoining bushes and surrounding areas,” Jimoh said. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Residents were urged to remain calm and provide any actionable information that could aid the investigation. The police assured the public that every available resource would be deployed to bring the assailants to justice. “Members of the public with credible information are encouraged to report to the nearest police station,” the statement added.
The incident has intensified concerns over security in Ondo State, particularly targeting traditional institutions. Analysts note that attacks on monarchs not only threaten community leadership but also destabilize local governance structures. Previous reports indicate a worrying trend of armed groups exploiting rural areas for kidnappings and violence, signaling the urgent need for robust preventive measures
Furthermore, the killing underscores gaps in protective frameworks for community leaders despite existing collaboration between security outfits and local vigilante groups. While immediate apprehension of the culprits remains a priority, longer-term strategies must address intelligence gathering, rapid response, and community policing.
The tragic death of Oba Falodun is a stark reminder of Nigeria’s continuing struggle against armed violence. Authorities and community stakeholders now face the dual challenge of pursuing justice for the slain monarch while strengthening preventive security mechanisms to avert further attacks.
