NEMA Warns of Fire and Health Risks Amid Extreme Heatwave
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a nationwide alert following a sharp rise in temperatures and persistent heatwave conditions across Nigeria. Citing recent forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs Zubaida Umar, warned that extreme heat is significantly increasing the risk of accidental fires. The agency noted that elevated temperatures make household appliances, gas cylinders, and electrical systems far more vulnerable to ignition.
Households and business operators have been urged to tighten safety protocols regarding combustible materials. NEMA specifically advised against bush burning and the improper storage of flammable substances, which can turn minor sparks into uncontrollable infernos during dry weather. The agency also recommended the immediate inspection of electrical wiring, as excessive heat can strain aged circuits. Prompt reporting of fire incidents to local emergency services is critical to preventing mass property destruction.
Beyond the threat of fire, the agency raised the alarm over the physical toll of the current weather on the population. Extreme heat is contributing to rising cases of dehydration and heat-related illnesses across several regions. Mrs. Umar advised Nigerians to stay well-hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions, are at the highest risk during this period of sustained high temperatures.
The warning follows a trend of “extreme heat” forecasts that show no immediate signs of abating. Public institutions are being encouraged to maintain cool environments where possible and to monitor staff for signs of heat exhaustion. NEMA’s focus on proactive disaster risk reduction is part of a broader federal effort to safeguard lives and the environment from climate-related shocks.
