DJ Association Declares Boycott of Burna Boy’s Music

The Nigerian DJ Association has announced an immediate boycott of music by Grammy-winning Afrobeats artist Burna Boy, following reports of a physical confrontation between the singer and prominent disc jockey DJ Tunez at a Lagos nightlife venue. The decision marks a rare instance of collective industry action against a major Nigerian artist and has intensified scrutiny of professional conduct within the country’s entertainment sector.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday at Obi’s House, a weekly Afrobeats event that has become a fixture in Lagos’s nightlife calendar. According to accounts circulating within the industry, a verbal dispute between Burna Boy and DJ Tunez escalated into physical aggression, with members of the artist’s entourage allegedly becoming involved before bystanders intervened to separate the parties. The precise trigger for the confrontation remains unconfirmed, though social media speculation has linked it to entrenched rivalries within the Afrobeats ecosystem, particularly DJ Tunez’s professional association with Wizkid, an artist frequently positioned against Burna Boy in fan-driven comparisons.

In a detailed statement released via Instagram, the NDJ framed its response around principles of workplace dignity and collective protection. “No one is born hating another because of the skin colour, religion, background or gender. People simply learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can also be taught to love since love comes naturally to the human heart than its opposite,” the association stated, quoting Nelson Mandela’s framework on discrimination.

The statement emphasised institutional solidarity: “Please note: That Here at NigerianDJ, we put all our DJs first, standing firm on ‘ALL DJs are EQUAL’, offering a transparent and personal service to help our DJs and clients achieve their goals and ambitions, both in Home and in Diaspora.” The association invoked universal human rights principles, asserting that “every Male and Female NDJ seek equal justice, equal opportunity and equal dignity without discrimination, irrespective of where it’s coming from, be it from a fellow NDJ or NON NDJ.”

The NDJ concluded with an explicit punitive measure: “Burna Boy Music is temporary out of any of our DJs playlist till further notice, our team will carry out a proper investigation on last night incident that happened to one of our own, DJ Tunez.”

The boycott raises significant questions about the economics of Nigeria’s music industry, where disc jockeys function as critical gatekeepers in determining commercial visibility and streaming performance. Burna Boy, whose discography includes multiple Billboard-charting albums and international festival headliner status, represents a substantial content category for Nigerian DJs servicing both domestic venues and diaspora events. The association’s decision to suspend his catalogue pending investigation signals an unusual assertion of institutional leverage by a professional body often marginalised in industry power structures.

Neither Burna Boy’s management nor DJ Tunez has issued official statements clarifying the circumstances of the altercation as of press time. The incident occurs within a broader context of periodic tensions between recording artists and the technical professionals who control live performance environments and radio playlist rotations.

The NDJ’s intervention also touches upon longstanding debates regarding artist accountability and the treatment of support personnel within Nigeria’s creative industries. The association’s appeal for tolerance and rejection of “prejudice based on cast, creed, sect, religion or gender” suggests the incident is being interpreted as part of a pattern requiring structural response rather than isolated disciplinary action.

Industry observers note that the effectiveness of the boycott will depend on enforcement consistency across the NDJ’s membership base, which spans both commercial broadcast operators and independent event contractors. The association has not specified criteria for concluding its investigation or conditions for reinstating Burna Boy’s music to member playlists.
