Two Years On, Junior Pope’s Widow Recounts Tragic Loss

Friday, April 10, marked exactly two years since Nollywood lost one of its most energetic talents to the waters of the Anam River, and for Jennifer Odonwodo, the passage of time has done little to dull the sharpness of that afternoon.

In a deeply personal Instagram post, Jennifer, wife of the late actor John Paul Obumneme Odonwodo, widely known as Junior Pope, recounted the sequence of events that unfolded on April 10, 2024, the day her life changed without warning.

“This day two years ago, at about some minutes past 3pm, while getting dressed to go for a photoshoot, I received the most devastating call of my life… Awele, the boat JP was on just capsized,” she wrote.

Her account is a portrait of disbelief holding grief at bay. She recalled that her hands began shaking immediately, yet a part of her convinced herself it could not be real. “A part of me held onto the fact that it was a prank,” she wrote.

That hope did not survive her arrival at the scene. “I was driven to the scene and saw the very massive crowd… a black Hilux drove past me with my husband lying lifeless in its trunk with the same red shorts he wore when he left the house. I screamed JESUSSSSS, which I’m sure Heaven heard the echo,” she wrote.

The shock had physical consequences. Doctors discovered her blood pressure had climbed dangerously high. “For some reason, the doctor checked my BP, and it was over 210 thereabout… I was immediately admitted,” she wrote.

Even then, she held on. “I was in denial, because how can someone who told me to warm and keep the jollof rice he had the night before to have the same night of April 10th not be here to eat it?” The finality only settled when pallbearers arrived with his casket, accompanied by cannon sounds.

Her tribute was not only grief; it was also gratitude. “Johnpaul Obumneme Odonwodo, God is taking care of your children and I, and your mother as well. It hasn’t been easy, but God has been faithful,” she wrote, addressing her late husband directly. “Continue to rest peacefully in God’s bosom, Swag King. We miss you so much.”

The post was accompanied by videos capturing Junior Pope’s playful moments with his wife and their three children.

Condolences poured in from followers. One user, @divinejp1, wrote, “Take heart, my dear, we all miss him… may his soul find rest in the Lord.” Another, @lady_ized, offered, “So sorry for your loss, sis. God will continue to console you and your children,” while @k.c_eunice added simply, “It’s well with you, dearest.”

Junior Pope, born May 7, 1981, died on April 10, 2024, when the boat conveying him and other cast and crew members capsized on the Anam River in Anambra State. Three crew members also perished in the incident. A subsequent investigation by the Actors Guild of Nigeria found that no life jacket had been provided to the actor, and that only two passengers aboard were wearing life jackets, which they had hired from the boat operators. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau later confirmed that the boat driver was not certified and that the vessel was not registered with the National Inland Waterways Authority.

He was 42 years old and had appeared in over 150 Nollywood productions.
