Gunmen Attack NIPSS Kuru, Kill Three
Armed men have launched a deadly assault on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Plateau State. The attackers stormed the elite facility in Kuru near Jos late on Monday night. Three security operatives lost their lives whilst defending the nation’s foremost policy centre. This bold raid on a highly guarded federal establishment demonstrates the worsening audacity of criminal gangs in the Middle Belt. It also raises troubling questions about the state of intelligence gathering in the region.
The assailants arrived at the institute at approximately 11:40 p.m. and immediately opened fire. Security personnel stationed at the gates engaged the gunmen in a fierce, prolonged gun battle. The operational detail eventually repelled the attackers before they could penetrate the main living quarters. This swift resistance undoubtedly saved the lives of senior state officials residing on the campus. The true motive behind the late-night raid, however, remains unknown.
The casualties include two Nigerian Army soldiers and one police officer. These men formed part of the elite security detachment assigned to safeguard the institution. Their sacrifice prevented what could have evolved into a catastrophic mass abduction or assassination plot. The bodies of the fallen operatives have since been moved to a nearby medical facility. Their colleagues now maintain a tense, heightened state of alert around the perimeter.
The heavy gunfire caused severe panic across the surrounding local communities. Residents of the Jos South Local Government Area reported hearing sustained weapon discharge for several minutes. Many locals locked themselves indoors, fearing a wider invasion by the gunmen. The region has long suffered from sporadic communal violence and banditry. An attack on such a high-profile academic site, however, is a rare and disturbing development.
Management at the institute issued a statement to calm public anxiety. The Head of Public Affairs, Dr Osime Samuel, confirmed that authorities had contained the threat. He assured the public that participants, staff members, and vital facilities remained entirely safe. Normal academic and administrative programmes are moving forward precisely as scheduled. The administration is working hard to project an image of resilience amid the crisis.
Federal security agencies have launched a comprehensive investigation into the security breach. Officials have cautioned the public against spreading unverified rumours on social media platforms. The institute refused to confirm speculative details regarding the identity or numbers of the attackers. Investigators are currently scanning the surrounding hills for any fleeing suspects. Finding answers is crucial to restoring confidence in the safety of the state.
