APC Rules Out Automatic Tickets For Defecting Governors Ahead Of 2027 Elections

Top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have confirmed that governors who recently defected from other parties will not be guaranteed automatic tickets to contest in the 2027 elections. This applies to current governors including those from Akwa Ibom, Taraba, Rivers, and the soon-to-join governor of Kano State.

A member of the APC National Working Committee (NWC), speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that defection from another party does not guarantee candidacy, underscoring the party’s commitment to democratic processes. Bala Ibrahim, APC Director of Publicity, reinforced that all members will have equal opportunity to contest for elective positions.

Reacting to the ruling, opposition party officials from the PDP and NNPP noted that the move was expected, arguing that defecting governors had made decisions primarily to secure reelection.

The APC leadership emphasized that President Bola Tinubu himself would not automatically receive a ticket, despite his broad support within the party. The principle applies to all governors and party members, whether longstanding or recent entrants. Party officials stressed that performance, achievements, and membership support would determine eligibility for candidacy.

“This approach ensures a level playing field, protects the rights of members, and maintains the democratic integrity of the party’s electoral process,” Ibrahim stated.

While defections continue, APC officials made it clear that no preferential treatment will be given to any governor or public office holder. Consensus-driven decisions will only be considered where necessary, ensuring fair participation for all aspiring candidates.

Opposition party spokespersons criticized the move, suggesting that defectors may soon regret their decisions. They noted that the APC’s promises do not guarantee re-election, and that members who defect for personal advantage may find their influence limited within the party.
