The leadership transition crisis within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has taken a new turn after FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) directed the federation to suspend its ongoing electoral process pending a joint assessment of recent developments.
The decision places Nigeria’s football administration under closer international review as the two governing bodies examine questions surrounding leadership changes, governance procedures and the circumstances that led to the current uncertainty within the federation.
While FIFA and CAF have not announced any final position on the matter, their intervention means that no further steps are expected in the NFF electoral process until the assessment is completed. In a letter dated September 7, 2026, addressed to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov said FIFA and CAF were reviewing the legal, administrative, governance and electoral implications arising from recent events within the federation.
The international bodies said their assessment followed communications relating to the resignation of the NFF president, members of the federation’s Executive Committee and the General Secretary, alongside other submissions from football stakeholders in Nigeria.
FIFA and CAF also referenced a meeting held on September 1 at the Home of FIFA in Zurich involving representatives of FIFA, CAF, the NFF administration and the Federal Government of Nigeria, where the situation surrounding the federation was discussed.
The organisations stressed that the review process was still ongoing and that no conclusions had been reached.
“This assessment requires a careful review of the relevant facts, the applicable NFF regulatory framework and the positions communicated by the various stakeholders concerned,” FIFA stated in the letter.
The directive to suspend the election process was described as a temporary measure intended to maintain stability while the review continues. FIFA and CAF clarified that the decision should not be interpreted as an endorsement or rejection of any position taken by parties involved in the dispute.
The bodies instructed the NFF to avoid taking further actions connected to the electoral process until they provide further guidance.
As part of the process, Ikpeme was designated as the main communication channel between the NFF and the two international football authorities.
The request places the NFF administration in a coordinating role as FIFA and CAF prepare to gather more information from relevant stakeholders.
A joint FIFA-CAF mission is expected to visit Abuja to assess the situation directly. According to the letter, the visit will involve discussions with representatives of the NFF administration, members of the federation, electoral bodies involved in the process and officials of the Federal Government, including the National Sports Commission (NSC).
The proposed engagement is aimed at providing FIFA and CAF with a clearer understanding of the events surrounding the leadership changes and identifying any issues that may require further consideration under FIFA, CAF and NFF regulations.
The intervention comes at a sensitive period for Nigerian football, where questions around governance, leadership continuity and electoral procedures have become central issues within the administration of the sport.
However, FIFA and CAF have maintained a cautious position, noting that the assessment is still in progress and that possible outcomes remain open.
The organisations said that after completing their review, they would decide whether any recommendations or proposals should be presented to the appropriate decision-making bodies within FIFA and CAF in accordance with their statutes and regulations.
