The initiative was led by the Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KNCDC) after preliminary reports indicated possible cases of whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory illness that mainly affects children.
According to a statement issued by the Director-General of KNCDC, Prof. Muhammad Abbas, the outreach was designed to raise awareness, provide early treatment, and reassure residents of the government’s preparedness.
Speaking during the visit, Abbas explained that the team’s presence in the community was a direct response to health alerts received by the agency. He stressed the importance of early detection, urging parents and caregivers to take children showing symptoms such as persistent coughing, fever, or breathing difficulties to health facilities without delay.
The awareness campaign also focused on educating residents about disease prevention and the proper use of the free medication distributed during the exercise. Abbas noted that adherence to prescribed treatment is critical to achieving positive health outcomes and reducing the risk of transmission.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment to public health safety, the KNCDC boss assured residents that the agency remains on standby to respond swiftly to any suspected disease outbreak across Kano State. He added that continuous surveillance and community engagement are key to safeguarding public health and preventing wider outbreaks.
