Nigerian theatre director and comedy producer, Kayode Peters, fondly known as KP, was laid to rest today, prompting an emotional outpouring of tributes from Nigeria’s entertainment community. Among them was veteran comedian Teju Babyface, who credited KP with launching his journey into mainstream comedy.
In a heartfelt remembrance posted on social media, Teju Babyface recounted how his path to national recognition began with an introduction by Kayode Peters to legendary comedian Basorge Tariah Jnr. in the year 2000.
“At the time, I was a campus comedian at UNILAG with no idea how to transition to the professional scene,” he wrote. “Kayode had somehow met @grandmaster_basorge on a production set, and like play, like play, we both boarded a bus to Bariga to meet him. There were no mobile phones then, so it was a cold call visit. As luck would have it, we met him at home. KP convinced him I was the funniest thing since Basorge—and the rest is history.”
Describing Peters as a “king among men,” Teju Babyface reflected on his friend’s rare gift for connection, loyalty, and mentorship. “Do people die if they will never be forgotten? I think not, my brother. You will live as long as people remember you—and for you, Kayode, that means you will live for a long, long time indeed.”

KP was a towering figure in the Nigerian theatre and comedy space, known for directing some of the most acclaimed stage plays and sitcoms of his time. More importantly, he was celebrated for his role in nurturing young talent, often going the extra mile to help comedians and actors find their feet in a tough industry.
Teju’s tribute closed with a mix of humour and heartbreak—true to the spirit of their shared profession: “BUNOR! FANIATIME! WHEN TWO ELEPHANTS FIGHT, ONE MUST WIN. YOMẸ, YOU WIN. Goodnight, my brother and friend. O di’gba o.”
Kayode Peters leaves behind a legacy defined by laughter, mentorship, and a lifelong devotion to the stage.
