The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, has dismissed as false and unauthorised a circulating notice instructing newly admitted students to sign the matriculation list on 23 September 2026.
In a statement signed by the Registrar, Mrs Olayinka Balogun, the university management stated that the institution is currently on break and that no Faculty Office is conducting any matriculation list signing exercise. It clarified that the actual commencement date for the exercise will be communicated through official channels after the university resumes academic activities.
The viral notice had created confusion among newly admitted 100 Level and Direct Entry students for the 2025/2026 academic session. Many parents and candidates had begun making travel and accommodation arrangements based on the September 23 date.
An official internal memo dated 24 August 2026, also signed by the Registrar, provides important context. Titled “Dispatch of Matriculation List for 2025/2026 Newly Admitted Students,” the memo confirmed that the matriculation lists had been sent to the various Faculties. It directed Faculty Officers to ensure that every newly admitted student signs against his or her name and to submit three copies of the completed lists to the Registrar’s office on or before Wednesday, 30 September 2026.
The memo described the matriculation list as “an important statutory document of the University” and urged strict compliance. Management has since emphasised that the 30 September date is the internal deadline for Faculties to return the signed lists. It does not constitute an instruction that students must appear on 23 September, nor does it override the current academic break.
The university therefore urged newly admitted students and the public to disregard the viral notice entirely and to rely solely on official communication channels, including the university website and verified social media handles, for accurate updates. Management assured candidates that the commencement date for the signing exercise would be announced promptly after resumption.
Matriculation lists form a critical part of the formal admission process in Nigerian universities. Signing the list confirms a student’s acceptance of the offer and places the candidate on the official institutional record that is later transmitted to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. Errors or unauthorised alterations to these lists can create administrative complications, which is why institutions treat the document with statutory seriousness.
The episode highlights a recurring challenge in the Nigerian higher education space: the rapid spread of unverified information on social media platforms during admission seasons. Similar incidents have occurred at other universities, often causing unnecessary anxiety, wasted resources and, in some cases, exploitation by individuals posing as facilitators.
