Oyo Flags Off Market Waste Campaign to Tackle Indiscriminate Disposal

The Journal Nigeria June 19, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

The Oyo State Government has launched a new public sensitization campaign aimed at curbing indiscriminate waste disposal in markets across the state.

Dr. Morohunkola Thomas, Director-General of the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development, disclosed the plan during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Akande, in Ibadan on Thursday.

Thomas said the campaign, which will roll out in major markets, is part of Governor Seyi Makinde’s broader push for a cleaner, healthier environment and sustainable socio-economic growth.

“Governor Makinde’s administration has invested heavily in infrastructure and community development. To complement these strides, we’re moving to ensure our markets reflect the same level of attention by addressing waste issues,” he said.

The agency plans to raise awareness among traders and market users on the health and environmental risks of poor waste habits and the benefits of proper disposal practices.
Thomas called on local governments to work closely with the agency to reach more communities, especially at the grassroots. “The governor’s efforts should not be wasted. Local councils must partner with us to drive this campaign and amplify our message in all areas, including rural communities,” he added.

Responding, Chairman Akande affirmed the council’s readiness to support the initiative. He said the council had already begun taking steps to improve communication and public education at the community level.

“We are committed to making sure people at the grassroots receive accurate and timely information. The council will fully cooperate with the agency to ensure the success of this campaign,” Akande assured.

The sensitisation effort marks another step in the state’s ongoing campaign for environmental reform and public health advocacy.
