Veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs has died at 84, with his son announcing the news and requesting privacy for the family during its period of mourning.
Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84. His son, Olusoji Jacobs, confirmed the actor’s death in an Instagram statement on Wednesday, describing him as a husband, father, grandfather and uncle whose life was well lived.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” he wrote. The family also appealed for privacy as it mourns the veteran actor. “We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” Olusoji added.
Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most prominent actors, with a career that extended across theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before beginning his professional career on British television. He subsequently appeared in several international productions before returning to Nigeria.
After his return, Jacobs became an influential figure in the Nigerian film industry and appeared in numerous Nollywood productions. He earned recognition for performances that often featured his distinctive voice and commanding screen presence. His contributions to film were acknowledged with several industry honours, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival in recognition of his career and contribution to the development of African cinema. Beyond acting, Jacobs worked as a film executive and contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s performing arts sector.
Alongside his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was involved in the Lufodo Group, an organisation connected with film production and performing arts development in Nigeria. Through his work in theatre, television and cinema, Jacobs became one of the most recognisable actors of his generation and remained closely associated with the development of Nollywood.
