POPULAR NIGERIAN GOSPEL SINGER BUNMI ADEOYE “OMIJE OJUMI” DIES AFTER PROLONGED ILLNESS

Popular Nigerian gospel musician Bunmi Adeoye Akinnanu, widely known by her stage name Omije Ojumi, has died.

The singer reportedly passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness linked to a leg ailment, months after publicly appealing for prayers and divine healing. Her death has triggered an outpouring of grief across the Nigerian gospel music community and social media.

In 2025, a video of Akinnanu during a church service at G. F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, circulated widely online. In the footage, the gospel artiste was seen seated with her leg stretched out as prayers were offered for her recovery.

During the service, a cleric disclosed that the singer had been experiencing persistent bleeding from the affected leg, prompting intense intercessory prayers from the congregation.

Despite continued prayers and public support, the celebrated gospel singer eventually succumbed to the illness.

Rise To Stardom And Musical Legacy

Omije Ojumi rose to national prominence in the early 2000s after leaving a successful career in the banking sector to pursue gospel music full-time. Her stage name, Omije Oju Mi—translated as “Tears Of My Eyes”—was derived from her debut album, which catapulted her into the spotlight.

She went on to release several impactful gospel albums, including Dabira, Alatilehin, Ma Sunkun Mo, and Testimony, earning a loyal following for her emotionally rich and spiritually uplifting songs.

Akinnanu was also the leader of the Omije Ojumi Gospel International Music Band, through which she ministered across churches, concerts, and Christian gatherings.

 

Education And Career Background

Academically, the late singer studied Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at Lagos State University (LASU) after attending Lagos State Polytechnic. She reportedly spent over 10 years in the banking industry before fully transitioning into gospel music.

Known for seamlessly blending traditional Yoruba gospel sounds with contemporary worship music, Omije Ojumi became widely admired for songs centered on faith, perseverance, hope, and trust in God.

Her death marks a significant loss to the Nigerian gospel music industry, with fans, colleagues, and church communities mourning the departure of a voice that inspired many through worship and testimony.
