Kwara Mass Killings Expose Total Security Collapse — ADC
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned the killing of about 170 people in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, describing the attack as clear evidence of a collapse of national security under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party said the scale of the massacre ranked among the worst atrocities in recent times and raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the Federal Government’s security strategy.
According to the ADC, the killings point to a failure of previously announced emergency measures, including the Federal Government’s pledge to recruit thousands of police officers to strengthen internal security across the country.
“The African Democratic Congress condemns in the strongest possible terms the gruesome killing of about 170 innocent Nigerians in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State. This horrific massacre stands as a painful reminder of the complete collapse of security across the country,” the statement said.
The party warned that current counterterrorism efforts were not defeating violent groups but merely dispersing them across the country. It raised concerns that the attackers may include terrorist elements displaced by recent military operations in other parts of Nigeria, now exploiting weak internal security coordination to strike previously peaceful communities.
“What is now self-evident from these industrial-scale killings in areas hitherto considered safe is that the Tinubu administration is not winning the war against terror; it is merely redistributing it,” the ADC stated.
The party linked the Kwara killings to a broader pattern of violence nationwide, including mass abductions in Kaduna State and recurring attacks in rural communities across the country. It argued that the trend reflects deep structural failures in intelligence gathering, border management, inter-agency coordination and emergency response.
“Whether it is mass abductions in Kaduna or mass killings in Kwara, these incidents expose fundamental weaknesses in Nigeria’s internal security architecture,” the statement said.
The ADC also demanded accountability over the Federal Government’s pledge to recruit additional police personnel, questioning whether the exercise had been implemented or abandoned.
“Nigerians are entitled to know what has become of that promise. Have these recruits been employed, trained and deployed, or has the process quietly stalled? If such measures were genuinely implemented, communities like those in Kwara State should not be left completely exposed to mass slaughter,” it added.
Describing the situation as dire, the party said Nigeria’s security crisis had moved beyond routine condolences and post-attack condemnations, insisting that urgent and transparent action was required to restore public confidence.
The ADC called on the Federal Government to disclose the current status of national security operations, provide a clear account of police recruitment plans, and outline concrete steps to prevent the spread of terrorist groups across states.
