Romelu Lukaku Misses Napoli Training, Faces Possible Sanctions

Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku failed to report for a scheduled training session on Tuesday, a development that has pushed the Serie A club to consider disciplinary measures, including the possibility of sidelining the Belgian international from upcoming matches.

The club confirmed the absence in a brief official statement, saying, “We can confirm that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today’s call to return to training.” The statement added, “The club reserves the right to consider taking the appropriate disciplinary action, as well as to determine whether the player will continue to train with the team for an indefinite period.”

No reason for the striker’s failure to appear has been publicly disclosed. However, the incident follows weeks of growing tension between the player and the club, though details of the underlying friction remain unconfirmed by either party.

Lukaku joined Napoli in the summer of 2024 and has been a key figure in the club’s attacking setup. His absence from training now places his availability for upcoming fixtures in doubt, with Napoli emphasising the seriousness of the breach. The club stated, “We expect all players to adhere to professional obligations, including attendance at training sessions.”

The decision on disciplinary action is expected in the coming days. Should the club proceed with exclusion from team activities, it could affect Napoli’s preparations for their next Serie A fixture and any European commitments, depending on how swiftly the matter is resolved.

Lukaku, 32, has previously experienced club disputes during his career, including a widely reported fallout with Chelsea before his loan move to Inter Milan in 2022. His current contract with Napoli runs until 2027.

As of Tuesday evening, neither the player nor his representatives had issued a public response to the club’s statement. Napoli have not indicated a timeline for resolving the situation.
