Barca Faces Derby Risk Before Atletico UCL Rematch
The consequences of a bruising Wednesday night at Camp Nou are already reshaping Barcelona’s week, as coach Hansi Flick navigates one of the trickiest decisions of his tenure, how to balance an urgent La Liga derby against Espanyol on Saturday while keeping enough firepower intact for what promises to be a monumental Champions League second-leg assignment.
Atletico Madrid scored twice after Barcelona was reduced to 10 men to earn a commanding 2-0 away win in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday. The game turned on a VAR-upgraded red card for Pau Cubarsí, who brought down Giuliano Simeone on the edge of the area, after which Julián Álvarez curled a stunning free kick past Joan García just before half-time. Alexander Sorloth added the second goal with 20 minutes remaining to give Diego Simeone’s side a strong grip on the tie.
Now Flick must decide whether Saturday’s derby at Camp Nou is worth the risk of fielding key players who may be needed more urgently in Madrid on Tuesday.
“We have also a derby in three days on Saturday, our next match, it’s also important for us to win,” Flick said. “We will see, we will analyse everything, what kind of options we have.”
Barcelona’s lead in La Liga, currently seven points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, gives Flick some cushion, though it is comfort that could quickly shrink. Alvaro Arbeloa’s Real Madrid side host Girona on Friday, and a victory would cut that advantage to four points, making the calculus for rotation considerably less comfortable.
Real Madrid are navigating their own dual-front pressure after a 2-1 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, with their second leg in Bavaria scheduled for next Wednesday, though the gap between fixtures is wider than what Flick is working with.
Rotation options are available and potentially tempting. Players who have spent much of the season watching from the bench, Ronald Araujo, Marc Casado, and Roony Bardghji among them, could step in against an Espanyol side that has been in freefall since the year began. After a promising start to the campaign, Manolo González’s team have failed to win a single match in 2026, a run that began with a 2-0 home defeat by Barcelona itself.
Pedri’s fitness remains the most pressing individual concern ahead of both fixtures. The midfielder was substituted at half-time against Atletico and will need further assessment before Saturday’s game. Flick acknowledged the decision was precautionary. “Pedri had some problems. No big problems but in this situation we need him, so we made the decision to take him off the pitch,” he said.
On a more encouraging note, Frenkie de Jong returned to training this week after a hamstring injury and could be available for either the Espanyol fixture or the Atletico second leg. Gavi, meanwhile, made a positive impact as a substitute on Wednesday, and that performance could earn the 21-year-old more minutes at the weekend as he continues rebuilding match sharpness after a prolonged spell on the sidelines. “Gavi had a fantastic game,” Flick said.
On the other side of Saturday’s Madrid fixture, Atletico visit Sevilla and Diego Simeone is expected to rest several key players. With his side fourth in La Liga and Real Betis 12 points adrift in fifth, Simeone has the freedom to prioritise the European second leg in Abuja, a luxury Flick cannot entirely afford given the tightening title race.
Player To Watch: Vedat Muriqi
Mallorca’s Kosovan striker Vedat Muriqi has quietly assembled one of the most productive individual seasons in La Liga this term. The target man scored a crucial goal last week to help his side beat Real Madrid, a result that gave Mallorca vital breathing room in their relegation battle. With 19 goals to his name, Muriqi trails only Kylian Mbappé in the La Liga scoring charts and faces Rayo Vallecano on Sunday with plenty to play for.
Key Stats
Sevilla managed zero shots on target in their last outing against Real Oviedo, a troubling indicator for a side already deep in difficulty. Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García leads all La Liga stoppers in clean sheets with 12 this season. Real Sociedad’s Jon Aramburu has committed 58 fouls, the highest total among all outfield players in the division.
