Ghana To Host 2027 CAF U-20 AFCON
West African football will take centre stage in 2027 following confirmation that Ghana has secured hosting rights for the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, a key development competition on the African football calendar.
The announcement was disclosed by the Ghana Football Association in a statement published on its official X platform on Monday, stating that the decision was formally communicated by the Confederation of African Football in a letter addressed to its General Secretary, Prosper Addo.
According to the GFA, the selection reflects CAF’s confidence in Ghana’s organisational capacity to deliver a tournament that meets continental standards. The governing body noted that preparations will be coordinated with a Local Organising Committee expected to be constituted ahead of the event.
Ghana previously hosted the tournament in 1999, a year that ended in sporting success as the national U-20 team, the Black Satellites, lifted the title on home soil. The 2027 edition is also expected to align with the country’s 70th Independence anniversary, adding historical significance to the hosting rights.
CAF, as quoted in the statement, indicated that collaboration with Ghanaian authorities will prioritise infrastructure readiness, logistics, security arrangements, and fan engagement, all aimed at delivering what it described as a world-class tournament. While timelines for venue selection and upgrades have yet to be formally outlined, such preparations typically involve stadium refurbishment, accommodation planning, and transport coordination.
The CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations has long served as a pathway for emerging talents across the continent, with several past participants progressing to elite European leagues and senior national teams. The competition also doubles as a qualifying platform for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, further raising its competitive profile.
Ghana’s selection reinforces its standing within African football administration and tournament hosting. The country has hosted multiple continental competitions at different levels, supported by established stadium infrastructure in cities such as Accra and Kumasi.
