Inside Chelsea’s Renewed Bid For Africa’s Most Wanted Forward

Premier League side Chelsea have reportedly reopened discussions over a potential move for Nigeria international Victor Osimhen, placing the prolific forward back at the centre of one of European football’s most closely watched transfer sagas.

According to multiple reports circulating in European and Turkish media, the Stamford Bridge club has established preliminary contact aimed at exploring a deal for the 26 year old striker, though no formal agreement has been reached. The renewed interest comes amid Chelsea’s continued search for a long term centre forward, a position the club has tried to settle through several high profile signings in recent transfer windows without finding lasting stability.

Osimhen currently plies his trade with Turkish giants Galatasaray, who completed a permanent transfer for the striker in the summer of 2025 from Napoli for a reported fee of €75m, making him the most expensive signing in Turkish football history. The Istanbul based club have since placed his valuation at approximately €150m, a figure that, if met, would rank among the largest transfer fees ever recorded in football.

Since arriving in Istanbul, Osimhen has cemented his place as one of the Turkish Super Lig’s most decisive players. His performances during the 2024/2025 loan spell saw him score 37 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions, helping Galatasaray claim the league title. His current campaign has continued in similar fashion, with the forward consistently delivering goals, assists, and leadership in domestic and continental fixtures.

The fresh wave of speculation intensified following comments from Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who confirmed that Osimhen would miss Nigeria’s international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. The omission triggered widespread conjecture about a possible transfer, prompting Osimhen to publicly address the matter. The striker maintained that certain remarks had been taken out of context and dismissed suggestions of conflict between himself, his national coach, and his club.

Chelsea’s reported interest is consistent with the club’s stated transfer strategy under co owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who have spent in excess of £1bn on player acquisitions since taking control of the club in May 2022. Despite that historic outlay, the Blues have continued to struggle for a settled, world class striker, with Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, and more recently signed forwards yielding inconsistent returns.

Osimhen, who captured the 2022/2023 Serie A Golden Boot with 26 goals and was crowned 2023 CAF African Footballer of the Year, fits the profile of an elite, ready made goalscorer that Chelsea’s recruitment team has long pursued.

Competition for his signature is expected to be considerable. Reports indicate that clubs from England, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy continue to monitor his situation closely. Manchester United, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich have previously been linked with the Nigerian forward, while Saudi Pro League clubs reportedly tabled offers exceeding $80m annually during earlier transfer cycles, all of which Osimhen declined in favour of remaining in elite European football.

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has previously endorsed a move to Stamford Bridge, stating publicly that Osimhen possesses the mentality and ambition to thrive in the Premier League.

For now, Galatasaray’s strong negotiating position, anchored by Osimhen’s contract running until 2029 and reinforced by a reported €75m release clause applicable only to clubs outside Turkey, complicates any potential deal. Club officials in Istanbul have repeatedly indicated that only an extraordinary proposal would tempt them to part with the forward.

Until an official announcement emerges, the speculation will persist. What remains indisputable is that Victor Osimhen continues to command global attention, and his next move, whenever it materialises, will reshape the attacking landscape of whichever club secures his signature.
