Nigeria’s Falconets are out of the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup after a stoppage-time goal handed Colombia a 1-0 win in their quarter-final at the Stadion Miejski ŁKS in Łódź, Poland, on Sunday.
Valerin Loboa was the heartbreaker. She struck in the second minute of added time, racing onto a through ball, seeing her first effort blocked by Nigeria goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma, then tucking away the rebound to send the South Americans into the last four.
For long stretches it had looked like a night that might end level. The Falconets kept Colombia out for the full 90 minutes and created the better openings, but the finishing touch never came.
Janet Akekoromowei went closest in the 19th minute, striking the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the box. Tumininu Adeshina forced Colombia goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo into a save over the bar in the 38th minute after a low drive. Tosin Rafiu and Onyedikachi Ekezie were also busy in the attacking third.
The task got harder in the 77th minute, when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card for a foul on Samantha Rodriguez. Reduced to 10 players, Nigeria still pushed, frustrating Colombia while the South Americans looked to settle the tie on the break. That balance held until Loboa’s late intervention.
The exit ends what had been a spirited run. The Falconets began the group stage poorly, losing to Spain and drawing goalless with China, which left their qualification in doubt. They answered with a 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia to reach the knockout phase, then produced their best display of the tournament, a 3-0 win over England in the Round of 16, which raised real hopes of a deep run.
The quarter-final showed a different side of the team. Against a disciplined Colombia, who had earlier knocked out hosts Poland, Nigeria dominated possession and set-pieces but could not turn pressure into a goal. In a physical contest, both sides picked up bookings before the game turned on the sending-off and the late strike.
The defeat means Nigeria fall short of the semi-finals for the first time since 2014, and their wait for a maiden Under-20 world title continues. The Falconets have reached the final twice, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014, but the top step has stayed out of reach.
Officials struck a supportive tone afterwards. Nigeria Football Federation Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the players, telling them they had held nothing back and that the federation and Nigerians watching had seen their effort. He said the team created enough chances to win and urged them not to be disheartened.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Chioma Ohakim, also commended the players for their tenacity across the tournament.
Head coach Moses Aduku had turned to his bench in search of a breakthrough, bringing on Winner Onajite David for Queen Joseph and Precious Oscar for Favour Nkwocha as Nigeria chased the opener. The changes freshened the attack but could not unlock a Colombian defence that held firm until the final whistle loomed.
Colombia’s reward is a place in the semi-finals, where they will meet the winner of another last-eight tie. Nigeria return home to take stock of a campaign that mixed early frustration with flashes of the quality that has long marked their youth sides, and to begin building towards the next cycle.
The margin, decided by a single goal deep into added time, will sting. But the run from a shaky start to the quarter-finals leaves the Falconets with something to build on, even as the search for that elusive first title rolls on.
