Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, will on Monday, November 9, 2020, handover to an acting chairman who will oversee the affairs of the commission until he gets the approval of the Senate for a re-nomination.
The outgoing INEC chairman was re-nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari who sent his name to the senate for confirmation.
Prof. Yakubu’s first tenure comes to an end on Monday and he is expected to hand over to one of the National Commissioners whose tenure is yet to expire.
Mr. Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, confirmed the development. He stated that ‘The Hon Chairman’s (Yakubu) handing over ceremony to be held on Monday 9th November 2020 at the Conference Hall, INEC Headquarters.’
Yakubu, who took over from acting chairman, Mrs. Bala Zakari, was appointed INEC chairman in 2015 alongside five other national commissioners including Zakari. The appointments followed an approval by the National Council of State which had an emergency meeting, being the first under president Buhari, at the presidential Villa, Abuja.
