N50m Reward As Carter Efe Outclasses Portable In Ring
Celebrity boxing in Lagos took a commercial turn on Friday night as Emeka Okonkwo confirmed he would fulfil a N50 million promise to Carter Efe after his unanimous decision victory over Habeeb Badmus at the Chaos in the Ring 4 event.
The bout, staged at the Balmoral Hall of the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, marked the climax of a month-long public rivalry between the two entertainers, driven largely by social media exchanges and previous exhibition fights.
Speaking at the end of the event, E-Money reiterated his financial pledge when prompted by Balmoral Group Promotions chief executive, Ezekiel Adamu. “You know we put our money where our mouth is, and so congratulations Carter on your win. N50 million for you,” he said.
Adamu described the event as meeting expectations, noting that organisers delivered on pre-fight publicity. “We promised Chaos in the Ring and we have delivered very entertaining fights tonight. There is more coming,” he stated.
Inside the ring, Carter Efe controlled proceedings from the opening bell. Portable, known for his aggressive but unstructured style, started with wide punches, but Efe responded with measured uppercuts and body shots, gradually dictating the pace. By the second and third rounds, Efe’s cleaner combinations and composure became decisive, as judges scored the contest 27-30 in his favour across all three cards.
Pre-fight exchanges had set a different tone. Portable, who previously defeated Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington in celebrity bouts, had declared his intent to secure a third belt, telling his opponent, “I will use you to collect my third belt.” Efe, however, dismissed the threat, replying, “One punch and you fall.”
Friday’s result did not align with those predictions, as the comedian secured a clear win and the associated financial reward.
Beyond the headline bout, the event also featured title fights with regional implications. Godday Appah emerged as the new WBO Africa cruiserweight champion after a split decision win over Ezra Arenyeka in a contest framed as a symbolic “peace fight” between Itsekiri and Ijaw communities. Basit Adebayo also claimed a WBO Africa title, defeating former WABU champion Loren Japhet by unanimous decision.
The growing popularity of celebrity boxing in Nigeria reflects a blend of entertainment and sport, with financial incentives, social media engagement, and crossover appeal shaping audience interest. While largely exhibition in nature, such events continue to attract corporate backing and public attention, raising questions about the long-term structure and regulation of the format.
